Swimming pools in Cape Town shut their doors

End of beach and pool season in Cape Town

Monday, 21 April, marked the end of the busy summer beach and pool season in the City of Cape Town, with lifeguards officially going off duty and the majority of swimming pools closing.

According to the City, lifeguards had a demanding season preventing incidents, assisting the public, as well as responding to emergencies.

And now, with summer lifeguards going off duty, the public is reminded that the risk of drowning remains ever-present, especially during the off-season when supervision is limited.

“Don’t become another statistic. Please obey warning signs, avoid swimming on isolated beaches and always remain within your swimming ability. Learning to identify rip currents can save your life,” the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham said.

As per these statistics, there were 63 drowning incidents recorded during the season, with, sadly, 14 of these being fatal.

Which pools are closed and which remain open?

The City has said that most of their public pools have now closed for the winter season, with the exception of indoor pools and the Sea Point swimming pool, which operate throughout the year.

Cape Town’s indoor pools that will remain open include:

  • Blue Downs,
  • Long Street,
  • Retreat, and
  • Strand.
