Sponsorship affair : Club presidents condemns MTN Cameroon’s alleged complicity with FECAFOOT

The presidents of Cameroonian football clubs have formally have broken their silence and called out MTN Cameroon the main sponsor of professional football championship, for their role in the poor execution of the contract governing it. In a letter dated 4th February 2025, the presidents of professional clubs denounce the complicity between MTN Cameroon, and highlighted continued use of its logo on team jerseys despite unresolved issues surrounding the sponsorship deal.

The clubs asking for transparency are Fauve Azur, Bamboutos, Canon de Yaoundé, Dragon de Yaoundé, Aigle de Nkongsamba, Djiko FC, AS Fortuna, FAP, Stade de Melong, Astres de Douala, Fovu de Baham and TKC. In their correspondence, they cite the following grievances :

– The clubs do not know the amount paid by MTN;

– The funds do not reach the clubs;

– MTN does not involve the clubs in the negotiations;

– They accuse MTN of not following up the effective payment of sponsorship funds to the clubs.

In the midst of these concerns, club presidents are threatening to take legal action against MTN and other measures such as “suspending the wearing of players jerseys branded with MTN logo in the MTN Elite One and Two championships from the second phase of the season”.

Cameroon’s professional league has been experiencing severe financial crises since its launch this season. Tension between clubs and the Fecafoot have seemingly escalated over financial management particularly linked to stadium rental fees and sponsorship funds. A conflict that’s tarnishes the image of Cameroon football, that aspires to be the best in Africa.
