Spain: Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever case reported in Ciudad Real

Health officials with Government of Castilla-La Mancha report a confirmed Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) case in the Puertollano health district of Ciudad Real, south of Madrid.

The patient is a 46-year-old man who has been transferred to the High-Risk Infectious Diseases Unit of the Gรณmez Ulla Central Defense Hospital in Madrid.

This is the third CCHF case reported in Spain this year (two cases were previously recorded in the province of Salamanca.

The ECDC notes that the tick of the Hyalomma spp. โ€“ the main vectors of CCHF virus โ€“ are widely distributed across the country and CCHF virus is known to circulate in local animal populations. The timing of these cases aligns with the expected seasonal pattern of CCHF in Spain.
