You may have already carved out a chunk of your schedule this weekend to pay special attention to the Summer Games Fest (including a lively showing from Xbox) and to treat your brand-new Nintendo Switch 2 right. What you didn’t count on was PlayStation making a late charge with a State of Play this evening, 23hoo local time.
We’d be lying if we said we weren’t slightly disappointed this isn’t a proper PlayStation Showcase. But it does beg the question — has State of Play taken over as the de facto Showcase? In honour of the late E3, June is typically when Sony would come out guns blazing. And with the more recent State of Plays delivering hits like Astro Bot and Ghost of Yōtei — it could be a sign that the Showcase name is dead forever.
E3… but with extra steps
In which case, we’re going to withhold judgment until the show is over. That’ll only be at around 23h40, however. While the Summer Games Fest and Xbox Showcase are expected to be approximately two hours long each, Sony reckons 40 minutes will be plenty to convey the games arriving this year. We’re hoping it’s got a quality over quantity mindset here.
“State of Play returns June 4! Watch live for news and updates on must-play games coming to PS5. The show highlights a selection of great games from creators across the globe,” Sony wrote in a blog post.
Sony’s mention of “must-play games” further reinforces the idea that this is a Showcase in disguise. We wish we could back that up with solid rumours going into the State of Play, but the rumour mill has been surprisingly dry of late, with most industry leakers turning their attention toward the Summer Games Fest.

We can make some guesses, though. It’s almost difficult to believe that Insomniac Games announced that epic-looking Wolverine game alongside Spider-Man 2 back in 2021, meaning Sony’s favourite child is due an update any day now. We’re also holding thumbs for more news on whatever Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is, Naughty Dog’s latest attempt to distract itself from developing The Last of Us 3.
If you’re interested in checking out what Sony’s got on the PlayStation slate, make your way over to PlayStation’s official YouTube or Twitch channels by 23h00 tonight, 4 June. Or, you could just head back to this article where we’ve embedded the live stream for your convenience. If the Sandman’s got you in his clutches at the time, you could always return to Stuff tomorrow for a quick round-up of the biggest announcements of the night.
