Solihull student’s Snowdon climb raises hundreds for Gambian school

An intrepid student at Solihull Sixth Form College has raised hundreds for a school in West Africa after taking on a sponsored hike.

Adam Dar is a member of the 2026 Team Gambia group, which will be travelling to The Gambia in November to volunteer at the Abuko Nursery and Lower Basic School.

Each student taking part is tasked with raising £400 for the school, which will be used to pay teachers, purchase resources and help improve facilities at the school.

Adam decided to climb Mount Snowdon in Wales, asking friends and family to sponsor him, and smashed his goal to raise an impressive £500.

“I chose to take on this challenge because I really enjoy hiking,” said Adam, who wore a special Team Gambia 2026 T-shirt for the climb.

“It took me roughly four to five hours to reach the peak.

“The climb was tiring and longer than I expected but, at the same time, the viewpoint of the landscape was amazing.”

Associate assistant principal Anisa Lokat-Fanning said: “I’m so proud of Adam for this fantastic achievement.

“When Adam and the other learners travel out to Africa they will see just what a huge difference that money makes to the lives of the children at the Abuko Nursery and Lower Basic School.”

This year’s trip to The Gambia will be the 11th visit.

To date, students at the college have raised £104,000 for the school, helping to build new classrooms and enable many more children to get an education.
