First things first: Whether you eventually decide to go on a Tanzania or Kenya safari, we are sure you will have an incredible experience! Both countries are considered classic Big Five destinations with some of the best places for wildlife viewing worldwide.
And the best part: You don’t even have to decide between the two – you can simply travel to both as part of the same trip.
But if you only have time to go to one of the two, we admit that choosing between travelling to Tanzania or Kenya is not easy. It will depend on your travel preferences as there are only slight differences.
We will share our experience to make this choice easier, and if you’re still uncertain, you can always opt for a cross-border safari and experience the best of both countries.
An overview of Tanzania and Kenya as travel destinations
Similarities between Tanzania and Kenya
Kenya and Tanzania, two neighbouring countries in East Africa, are both safe travel destinations with thriving tourism industries catering to various budgets.
Both countries have Swahili and English as official languages. However, English is not taught in all schools in Tanzania and you may need to know Swahili to communicate in certain situations.
This makes it essential to have an excellent guide who can navigate these situations for you.
Getting to either country is fairly easy.
Both countries have world-famous national parks with a high concentration of wildlife, similar vegetation. They even share an ecosystem in Tanzania’s north and Kenya’s south, the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.

Their shared coastline along the Indian Ocean offers stunning coral reefs and beautiful beaches.
As a result, you’ll enjoy a similar variety of wildlife viewing and tropical beach experiences in both countries.
Differences between travelling in Tanzania and Kenya
The differences are subtle yet significant depending on the type of traveller you are.
Solo travellers and couples will enjoy similar experiences in both countries; however, Kenya might be more suitable for families with young children due to its family-friendly accommodations with excellent family activities.
Active travellers with summit ambitions can trek Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and enjoy several types of coastal water sports.

For a less frequented experience on equally challenging trails, opt for Mount Kenya instead. Afterwards, explore the vibrant underwater world along Kenya’s coast.
For those interested in conservation and unique experiences, Kenya’s private conservancies are an excellent choice. These conservancies protect ecosystems and rare species while supporting local communities.
They limit visitor numbers and offer activities like running in the wild, horseback riding, visits to rhino sanctuaries and more.
Seasoned safari-goers or people who want to venture where few have gone before will love Tanzania’s remote parks. Some of which allow offroad driving and walking in remote wilderness where you might stumble across a piece of history left behind in WW1.
In summary, both Tanzania and Kenya provide excellent safari experiences for solo travellers, couples, and active people on various budgets.
However, families with young children might prefer Kenya’s private conservancies, and returning travellers may want to explore Tanzania’s remote national parks.
Two of our favorite Tanzania safaris:
Types of travel in Tanzania and Kenya
There are two ways to get around in Kenya and Tanzania: guided road safaris and fly-in safaris. Neither country is particularly suitable for self-drive safaris.
Guided Road Safaris
On a guided safari, you’ll have an authentic experience. Expert guides will drive you from one destination to another while sharing their passion for nature.
These guides will likely be one of the highlights of your experience.
You can choose between a private or group safari.
Private safaris allow you to select your dates, destinations, and companions, making them perfect for couples or families who want to travel alone, as well as individuals with specific interests such as photography or birdwatching.
Small group safaris are limited to seven guests plus guide, ensuring everyone has a window seat. They are scheduled throughout the year and will proceed even if only two people book the experience.

A highlight is meeting like-minded people, allowing you to share the experience and form lifelong friendships. Group safaris are ideal for solo travellers, couples who are keen to meet new people and those on a tighter budget.
Fly-in Safaris
Fly-in safaris allow you to spend more time in nature and less time on the road. After all, Tanzania and Kenya are both vast countries; Tanzania is 2.6 times bigger than Germany, whilst Kenya is 1.6 times larger.
A fly-in safari is an excellent option for those with limited time or those who want to spend more time amongst the wildlife and immersed in nature.
Flights are usually scheduled for mid-morning to allow for an early morning game drive or game drive on your way to the airstrip and an afternoon drive upon arrival at the next destination.
Self-drive Safaris
Poor road conditions, extraordinary driving styles, and vast parks that are difficult to navigate mean that self-drive safaris are not recommended in Tanzania and Kenya.
Those interested in self-drive safaris can do so with our sister companies: South Africa-Experience, Namibia-Experience and Botswana-Experience in countries more suitable to this type of travel.

Types of accommodations in Kenya and Tanzania
Lodges, permanent tented camps, and adventure camping are available in both countries.
In both countries you can stay at small and intimate properties which offer an exclusive and very personal experience. These camps and lodges can be higher priced.
Kenya additionally offers a greater choice of larger lodges accommodating more guests. These properties can provide a more affordable stay.

Kenya also offers Family Friendly stays with child friendly and engaging activities in many of the private conservancies.
Lodges and permanent tented camps share the same features. The main distinction is that lodges have solid structures, whereas permanent tented camps use canvas walls that give you a closer connection to nature. Both offer all creature comforts with various options, from standard to luxury.
Adventure Camping Safaris are ideal for budget-conscious individuals. Our camp crew manages all aspects of camp life at public campsites, and we provide top-quality camping equipment to ensure a comfortable experience.
Mobile Explorer Camping is unique to Tanzania. This exclusive experience allows for a deep immersion into the wilderness, camping in complete comfort at private campsites. This option will bring you closer to the original safari experience of days gone by.

Our team sets up the camp for you and prepares three meals a day. You will stay in dome tents with proper beds, comfortable mattresses, and linen. This experience promises unforgettable moments immersed in nature.
Choose Tanzania to enjoy Mobile Explorer Camping and Kenya if you are keen on private conservancies that offer family activities.
Wildlife experience: Is Tanzania or Kenya better for a safari?
Kenya and Tanzania both offer exceptional wildlife experiences with sightings of the Big Five and many other classic safari animals. When you think of “safari”, you likely think of the safari experience you have in East Africa – it’s the home of the safari.
Many visitors to East Africa hope to see the Great Wildebeest Migration. Good news: You can see the Great Migration in both countries, Kenya as well as Tanzania.

However, Tanzania has the advantage of being home to the Great Migration all year round, whereas Kenya only hosts them for a short period of time when they cross the Mara River between July and October (depending on the rains).
You are sure to have a great wildlife experience in either county, with regional differences in the wildlife you can expect.
Best places for safaris in Tanzania and Kenya
Tanzania has three safari circuits:
Whilst first time safari explorers might want to opt for the northern circuit, seasoned safari goers will have the experience of a lifetime on the southern and western circuits.

Kenya features two safari circuits connected by the central Rift Valley region:
- The Northern Circuit is known for its remote parks and conservancies that host unique species. Notable highlights include Samburu National Reserve, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, and Meru National Park.
- The Southern Circuit showcases well-known parks such as the Masai Mara National Reserve, Amboseli National Park, and Tsavo East- and Tsavo West National Parks.

Excellent game drives and extraordinary experiences are guaranteed throughout both countries.
What are the differences between safaris in Kenya and in Tanzania?
Many will argue that the safari experience in Tanzania and Kenya is very similar. Both countries offer classic safaris with sightings of the Big Five, large herds of animals and a generally high density and diversity of wildlife.
If your focus is witnessing the Great Migration, you may be more lucky in Tanzania. You can witness the dramatic river crossings in both Kenya and Tanzania between June and late October (dependent on rainfall and somewhat unpredictable).
However, the migration is a year-round occurrence. And other notable events in the migration calendar – like the calving season – take place in Tanzania, not in Kenya.

Another important difference: Safaris in Tanzania usually take place in national parks. On the other hand, Kenya has national parks as well as a number of private conservancies. While national parks are often bigger and can feel more remote, private conservancies have the benefit of offering additional activities. These are usually more restricted and not always available in national parks.
These activities include walking safaris, cycling, horseback riding and conservation experiences.
If you would like to add activities other than classic game drives to your itinerary, we recommend highlighting this early during the booking process. This way, our travel experts can recommend the best places to visit.
Safari vehicles in Kenya and Tanzania
When you book with us in Tanzania or through our sister company, Kenya-Experience, you’ll travel in our custom made 4×4 Toyota Land Cruisers that guarantee you a window seat.
These vehicles have pop-up roofs, large windows, and charging points to ensure comfort and safety throughout your journey.

The unobstructed views allow you to capture stunning photos while exploring the parks. The charging points ensure that your camera batteries won’t run out of power.
With exceptional off-road capabilities, our experienced guides will skilfully navigate all areas of the parks for an unforgettable experience.
Cost of a safari in Tanzania or Kenya
In general, Kenya and Tanzania are more expensive travel destinations than Namibia and South Africa.
One of the driving factors for prices are national park fees which are considerably less expensive in southern Africa.
In the past, Kenya was known as a the more affordable option compared to Tanzania, thanks to its diverse range of accommodation choices and particularly budget-friendly options, which are available throughout the country.
In 2024, entry fees for the popular Masai Mara in Kenya increased and more parks are considering increasing their fees. As a result, if you want to visit the Masai Mara – especially during the high season – Kenya is no longer significantly less expensive than Tanzania.

You can save money when planning your safari in either country by:
- Visiting during the shoulder seasons to enjoy both fewer visitors and slightly lower prices. We recommend the first two weeks of December and the first three weeks of June.
- Choosing a group safari limited to seven guests plus guide, ensuring a window seat for everyone.
- Varying the types of accommodation throughout your itinerary.
- Travelling during the long rainy season for the lowest rates.

Best Time to go on a Tanzania or Kenya safari
Kenya and Tanzania share similar climates and ideal travel periods.
Their location near the equator results in a tropical climate characterised by two dry and two rainy seasons instead of traditional summer and winter.
The best time to visit both countries is from June to October, this is the main dry season. During this period, wildlife gathers around permanent water sources, and vegetation is less dense, offering optimal conditions for wildlife viewing.

The weather at the coast is also very pleasant at this time of year.
However, the dry season is the peak of the tourism season. Therefore, higher prices apply and booking at least six months in advance is necessary.
The shoulder seasons, listed below, are excellent times to visit.
- From November to mid-December, the short rains create lush green landscapes, and passing afternoon or nighttime storms will not disrupt your experience.
- From January to mid-March, there is a brief dry season with warmer temperatures, making it an excellent time to visit if you like the heat.
- The first three weeks of June, the start of the dry season, offer a quieter time in the parks and a tranquil experience before the hustle and bustle of high season begins.
The long rainy season occurs from mid-March to May and is characterised by daily rainfall.
With available water everywhere, the animals disperse into the wilderness, making wildlife viewing challenging. Additionally, sections of parks become inaccessible, and some accommodations close.
Nonetheless, it is the low season, attracting the fewest visitors and offering the lowest prices.

Accessibility of Kenya and Tanzania
Getting to Kenya is marginally easier than getting to Tanzania, thanks to the greater availability of direct flights to the capital Nairobi.
When flying to Tanzania, choose:
- Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) in Arusha if you are visiting the northern parks.
- Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam when visiting the southern parks.
- Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ)on Unguja (Zanzibar Main Island) to depart after concluding your safari at the beach.
When flying to Kenya, choose:
- Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi to access the parks in the north and south.
- Moi International Airport (MBA) in Mombasa to depart Kenya after concluding your safari at the beach.

- Bush Walking Safaris allow you to experience nature from a different perspective and at a different pace. You can explore the open savannah or woodlands on foot, seeing ancient trees and wildlife along the way.
There are more opportunities for walking safaris in Kenya than in Tanzania.

Both Tanzania and Kenya have excellent snorkelling and diving locations. With Mafia Island in Tanzania being one of the more remote and secluded options.
