Several people lost their lives on Saturday when two helicopters, carrying a total of five individuals, collided mid-air and crashed in Finland, according to local police reports.
“The accident has resulted in several fatalities. The exact number of victims and the identities of the passengers are still being determined,” the police said in a statement.
A tragic mid-air collision between two helicopters in Finland on Saturday has claimed several lives, authorities confirmed. The aircraft, which had departed from Estonia earlier that day, were reportedly carrying a group of businessmen—three aboard one helicopter, two in the other.
The incident occurred just west of Helsinki around midday, according to initial media reports. The helicopters crashed to the ground shortly after the collision, though Finnish police have yet to confirm the precise number of casualties or the identities of those on board.
While the cause remains under investigation, officials have so far offered no details on what led to the accident.
Eyewitness accounts are beginning to paint a clearer picture. Finnish newspaper Iltalehti quoted Antti Marjanen, a local resident, who said he witnessed one helicopter strike the other during a maneuver. “One of them dropped like a stone,” Marjanen recalled. “The other descended more slowly. I didn’t hear any sound.”
Authorities have cordoned off the crash site and launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision, with aviation safety experts expected to join the inquiry in the coming days.
