Scientists in July 2026 confirmed a new monkey species in the Congo rainforest — the Likweli, only the fifth African monkey identified in 75 years — after its first blurry photograph, taken in 2008, failed to attract serious scientific attention for a decade.
A blurry photograph from the central Congo rainforest recorded something science could not yet name. Taken in 2008, it showed a small black monkey with an unusual pale patch around its mouth, but the image was too indistinct to establish what the animal was. For about a decade, it remained an unresolved observation rather than a serious species claim.
Clearer photographs in 2018 changed that. After years of field observations, community interviews, anatomical comparisons, sound recordings and DNA analysis, researchers formally described Colobus congoensis in July 2026. They recommend calling it Likweli, the name used by local people. The open-access PLOS One paper identifies it as only the fifth African monkey discovered from a previously unknown population in 75 years.
That phrasing is important. July 2026 marks formal scientific recognition, not the moment when the animal first became known to humans. Communities near its forest habitat already knew it, even if it was unfamiliar to taxonomists.
The photograph that could not settle the question
The first photograph was taken in 2008 during biodiversity surveys in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It contained a tantalizing combination of traits, but blur can turn a real anatomical feature into an artefact. Without a specimen, clearer images or repeated observations, researchers could not exclude a known black colobus seen under unusual conditions.
In November 2018, better photographs from Lomami National Park revived the question. The subsequent investigation extended well beyond photography. Field teams accumulated 114 detections between 2018 and 2022, while researchers also examined three animals confiscated from hunters. A research announcement distributed by EurekAlert describes how the wider team assembled evidence across several disciplines rather than treating one image as proof.
Community interviews added another layer. Researchers spoke with people in 52 villages, but residents in only eight recognized the animal. That finding suggests Likweli is rare, geographically restricted and easy to miss even in a region where forest knowledge is extensive.
How scientists established a new species
Species descriptions are strongest when independent evidence points in the same direction. In Likweli’s case, morphology, genetics, geography and vocal behaviour converged. The monkey has predominantly black fur, a white patch around the rump and a conspicuous pinkish or orange-cream area surrounding its mouth. It is small for its genus, with a long tail adapted to life in the canopy.
DNA placed the population on its own evolutionary branch. Its closest known relative is the black colobus, Colobus satanas, whose present range lies more than 1,200 kilometres to the west. The team’s main genetic calibration put their split at about five million years ago, with an estimated interval of 4.3 million to 5.8 million years. An alternative calibration yielded about 4.1 million years, so the precise date remains model-dependent.
Recordings supplied behavioural evidence too. Likweli produces the powerful roars expected of a black colobus, but the sequence includes a distinctive snort. The full journal version of the species description documents how those calls differ from comparable recordings of related monkeys.
A tiny range framed by rivers
All confirmed records fall within an estimated range of roughly 1,700 square kilometres in and around Lomami National Park. The Lomami and Lilo rivers and a forest-savanna mosaic form prominent boundaries. In the Congo Basin, rivers can act as evolutionary walls, limiting movement and allowing populations on opposite banks to diverge over long periods.
The monkey’s habits also help explain how it escaped formal description. It lives high in dense forest, occurs at low density and resembles another dark colobus when seen briefly at a distance. The combination of canopy cover, remoteness and rarity makes even a conspicuous mammal hard to document. A Bournemouth University account of the research emphasizes that the discovery hints at how much biological diversity in the central Congo remains poorly recorded.
The 114 detections establish presence, not a census. Researchers do not yet have a robust total population estimate, and the currently mapped range may reflect both true biological limits and where surveys have been possible.
Why the “fifth in 75 years” count is unusual
News of a newly named primate appears more often than the statistic might suggest. That is because many additions result from taxonomic revision. Scientists may determine that two documented populations formerly treated as subspecies are different enough to count as separate species.
Likweli belongs to a narrower category: an African monkey described from a population that was previously unknown to science. The authors count it as the fifth such monkey in 75 years. Their broader count includes eight previously unknown catarrhine species, a grouping that covers Old World monkeys and apes. The Nature news summary likewise highlights the rarity of finding an African monkey that had not already entered the scientific record in some form.
This does not mean the 2008 image was ignored through carelessness. A blurry photograph was insufficient evidence for a formal name. What makes the timeline remarkable is the interval between a suggestive first glimpse and the stronger 2018 evidence that launched a sustained investigation.
A species recognized under immediate pressure
Formal recognition comes with a conservation warning. Likweli’s known range is small, hunting occurs in the region and climate change may alter the forest conditions on which it depends. The authors propose a preliminary Endangered assessment. That is a research recommendation, not yet a completed formal assessment by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Lomami National Park protects part of the habitat, but protection on a map does not answer the most basic biological questions. Scientists still need estimates of abundance, reproductive biology, diet, movement and seasonal habitat use. They also need to determine whether apparently suitable forests beyond the recorded range contain overlooked groups.
The local name matters here. Calling the species Likweli recognizes that discovery is not a simple story of outsiders finding an animal no one had seen. It is a process of translating local observations into the evidence and naming rules of global taxonomy. From one uncertain frame to a durable record
The scientific case for Likweli rests on accumulation. The 2008 photograph raised a question. Clear images from 2018 made the question testable. Four years of detections showed that the animal represented a recurring population, while specimens, DNA and recordings separated it from known relatives.
That sequence is also a useful correction to the word “confirmed.” The study did not confirm that no one knew the monkey existed. It confirmed, using several independent forms of evidence, that the population represents a previously undescribed species. The difference respects both scientific standards and the knowledge of people who share the forest. It also explains why a suggestive image could not substitute for years of careful fieldwork.
Researchers now have a name, a first map and a place for Likweli on the colobus family tree. They do not yet have a reliable count of how many survive in the wild today. The decade between the first blurry image and serious investigation made the species visible to science; the next task is ensuring that formal recognition arrived in time to help protect it.
