San Pedro end Rivers United’s UEFA Champions League campaign despite Uyo comeback

Rivers United staged a spirited second-half comeback from two goals down but could not complete the turnaround as FC San Pedro secured qualification to the next round of the CAF Champions League following a dramatic 2-2 draw in Uyo on Sunday.

The Nigerian representatives appeared to be heading out of the competition after the Ivorian side established a two-goal advantage, but Rivers United responded strongly after the interval to restore parity and give their supporters renewed hope of another continental escape. Blueprint reports

However, San Pedro held firm during a tense closing period at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium to advance at Rivers United’s expense.

The result was a particularly painful one for the Nigerian side, who had secured a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Côte d’Ivoire and returned home with hopes of completing the job before their supporters.

San Pedro seize control

Rivers United had entered the return fixture with a slight advantage after substitute Iyowuna Douglas rescued them in the first leg with a 69th-minute equaliser.

San Pedro had taken the lead through Issouf Dosso before Douglas struck to level the contest and leave the tie delicately poised ahead of the decisive encounter in Nigeria.

But rather than being overwhelmed by the atmosphere in Uyo, the Ivorian side produced an impressive first-half display and punished Rivers United with two goals.

The early setback put the Nigerian club in a difficult position, as they suddenly needed at least two goals simply to draw level in the match and keep their qualification hopes alive.

Rivers United struggled to impose themselves during the opening period as San Pedro defended their advantage and put the hosts under increasing pressure.

Rivers United fight back

Rivers United had also begun their Nigeria Premier Football League campaign on a positive note, defeating Plateau United 2-0 in their opening fixture.

That result had provided encouragement ahead of their continental assignment, but the demands of CAF competition proved considerably more difficult.

Against San Pedro, Rivers United showed considerable character by recovering from a two-goal deficit, but the damage suffered in the opening half proved too costly.

Their elimination also means Nigeria will have one fewer representative in the CAF Champions League as San Pedro move forward in the competition.

For Rivers United, the disappointment will be heightened by the manner of the exit.

They had travelled to Côte d’Ivoire, avoided defeat and returned to Nigeria with the tie firmly within their reach. Even after falling two goals behind in Uyo, they fought their way back to 2-2 and gave themselves a chance until the final stages.
