Saffa bruiser grateful for Rassie’s invite

Marnus van der Merwe wants to make his second appearance at a Springbok alignment camp count as the “competitive” hooker continues to make a big impression at Scarlets.

Speaking to Netwerk24, the 28-year-old admitted he feared being overlooked after moving to Wales but was reassured by the call-up as one of 26 players set to attend a virtual camp with Rassie Erasmus on 27 March.

Van der Merwe, who attended a similar gathering for the first time last year, views the invite as recognition from Erasmus for his dedication to his craft despite playing abroad.

“It means a lot to know they’re still watching me,” he said. “You do feel a bit lost when you move overseas. Just being invited is an achievement, but the hard work is only beginning.”

Van der Merwe left the Cheetahs for Scarlets in July 2024, seeking more game time and a competitive environment.

“The Cheetahs weren’t playing as much, and my rugby felt like it was at a standstill,” he said. “Scarlets gave me a chance to improve my game and push forward.

“They want to be competitive in the URC, and I’m a competitive person, so I’ve fitted in easily.”

Van der Merwe featured prominently for Scarlets in Saturday’s 29-17 loss to the Stormers, where fellow South African Jarrod Taylor came off the bench.

Dwayne Peel’s charges, in 14th on the Vodacom URC table, are still eyeing a playoff spot, and are five points behind the eighth-placed Stormers with five rounds left of the league phases.

“We set a goal to make the playoffs, and we’re on the right track,” Van der Merwe said. “We’ve had some close losses but have key home games ahead to turn things around.”
