Roos called up to Bok squad

Stormers No 8 Evan Roos has been added to the Springbok squad for the upcoming matches against the Barbarians, Italy and Georgia.

The move appears to be in mitigation of what looked like a serious hamstring injury to Vodacom Bulls No 8 Cam Hanekom in Saturday’s URC semi-final win against the Sharks.

Roos, who has starred for the Stormers this season and attended the Bok alignment camp in March, was a controversial omission from the original 54-man group named last week.

He has run out seven times in the green and gold. His last Test was against Portugal in Bloemfontein last year before he was sidelined for several months due to shoulder surgery.

The Bok squad was set to assemble in Johannesburg on Sunday afternoon and begin on-field preparations on Monday.

The season kicks off against the Barbarians in Cape Town on 28 June, in the first match between the teams on South African soil, before the Boks host Italy in back-to-back Tests at Loftus Versfeld and Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium (5 and 12 July), and Georgia in Nelspruit on 19 July.

With the Bulls and Leinster battling it out in the URC final at Croke Park in Dublin next Saturday, and Bath and Leicester meeting in the English Premiership final on the same day, players from those teams will join the squad after the completion of respective club commitments.
