As reported extensively by The South African website, Scott, now 61, was diagnosed with melanoma, an aggressive kind of skin cancer, almost 40 years ago.
Recently doctors discovered new tumours, and he spent a large part of the few months in hospital during his difficult battle with cancer.
Sadly, he lost his brave battle with the disease on Tuesday.
He is survived by his sons, Mark and Matthew.
TRIBUTES HAVE BEEN POURING IN FOR DARREN SCOTT
Scott firmly established himself as a household name in South African radio and television during his career, having been in the business for 40 years, including stints with the likes of Capital Radio, 5FM, 702, East Coast Radio, OFM, and Jacaranda FM.
He also enjoyed a successful TV career, largely with MultiChoice’s SuperSport, where he fronted the hugely-popular ‘Boots & All’ rugby show for many years.
Last year, Johannesburg-based radio station HOT 102.7FM confirmed that Scott would be returning to host its afternoon drive show, but he has endured incredible health struggles in recent time.
His HOT 102.7FM family paid a moving tribute to him on their website, saying he fought cancer with ”grit, humour, and determination for years.”
Darren was the most dedicated radio person I’ve ever known,” said HOT 102.7FM Breakfast presenter Simon Parkinson. “At one stage he was doing two live shows a day — breakfast in one province and drive in another. Who does six hours of live radio every day? Darren Scott.”
Just last year, Scott celebrated 40 years in radio and was inducted into the Radio Awards Hall of Fame — a fitting honour for a man who gave everything to the medium he loved.
