Prudence Sekgodiso Wins Her Maiden Global 800m Title at Nanjing 2025

South Africa’s middle distance star Prudence Sekgodiso kept her best for the 800m Women’s final at the World Athletics Indoor Championships Nanjing 2025, bursting into the lead in the final straight to record a world leading 1.58.40 to win gold in Jiangsu Province, China, on Sunday, 23 March, 2025.

Another Race Another Record for SA 800m Star Prudence Sekgodiso

Sekgodiso has built up to earn her first global 800m title on a string of gold medals, including World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold wins in Serbia and Germany, and the Athletics SA Grand Prix 1 in Tshwane in 1:59.01 earlier this year, in March.

Prudence Sekgodiso Obliterates SA Short Track 800m Record

The Olympic finalist hid in the leading bunch of Ethiopia’s Nigist Getachew, Portugal’s Patricia Silva and Switzerland’s Audrey Werro over the opening 300 metres to move past Werro at the 400m halfway mark, bursting into the lead with her strong surge with a 100m to go, to break the tape in 1:58.40.

South African Records Tumble at ASA Grand Prix 1 in Tshwane

In confirmation of the top-class competition, the top five finishers all set indoor race times of their lives in Nanjing, with Sekgodiso setting the world leading mark, Silva setting an indoor national record for Portugal of 1:59.80, Werro doing the same for Switzerland in 1.59.81, and both Getachew and Wielgosz setting personal bests in their races.
