Protea Esports Team Member Sydney Wood to Debut Internationally at the BRICS Esports Champs in Moscow

Mind Sports South Africa’s mixed pair of Sydney Wood and Luay Khan form the Protea Esports Team for Tekken 8 who have just landed arrived at the 2025 BRICS Esports Championships competition city, where the two will experience their first taste of international competition in Moscow, Russia, from 31 May to 1 June, 2025.

The Cape Town-based Wood is rated the best female Tekken 8 esports athlete in South Africa, and her comrade-in-arms Khan, from Durban, is reputed to be the best Tekken 8 esports athlete in the country.

Not since Lyrene Kűhn (WEC12, WEC13), Morizane Boyes (WEC14) and Charlize Seremak (WEC19) has woman represented South Africa in the Tekken esports title, and Wood will record another significant milestone this weekend, becoming the first woman to play in a BRICS Esports Championships, where her work will be cut out for her against an all-male field from 22 countries in the BRICS Esports Championships field.

Both players are from the PlayBell stable in Cape Town, where they had the opportunity to learn from the experience of Jonathan Brown who had represented South Africa at the 2021, 2022, and 2023 IESF World Esports Championships.

30 May: Drawing lots, Media Day, Practice
31 May: Group Stage
1 June: Play Offs
