Precious Mthembu is Hands On as U19 World Cup Preparations Move Up a Gear

South Africa’s rising netball stars, the Baby Proteas, delivered a dominant performance in the Margaret Beckford Sunshine Series in Jamaica, sweeping the three-match contest against the hosts in emphatic fashion.

Led by head coach Precious Mthembu, the team secured victories of 61-31, 49-32, and 47-33, stamping their authority against a formidable Sunshine Girls U21 side.

For Mthembu, a former Proteas stalwart now shaping the future of South African netball, the series was more than just a showcase of skill. It was a crucial stepping stone in the team’s preparation for the 2025 Netball World Youth Cup in Gibraltar.

“Participating in the Jamaican series was a great starting point and an important early step on our journey to the World Cup. Winning all three games boosted the players’ motivation, giving them confidence to build on their performance.”

With less than 180 days until the global showpiece, every match, training session, and competition opportunity matters. The Baby Proteas have been on an impressive run, having also claimed the African U21 Netball World Cup Qualifier title in 2024. However, Mthembu is not one to rest on past achievements.

She highlights how competing internationally has given her players an edge, exposing them to the demands of high-intensity netball.

“The biggest takeaways from the Jamaican series were getting to know the players and working on their skills throughout the competition. The short breaks between games allowed me to give individual attention to each player. The highlight was seeing them apply exactly what I had been teaching them.”

This hands-on approach is paying off. The Baby Proteas played with confidence and tactical discipline in Jamaica, demonstrating a growing maturity under Mthembu’s guidance.

Appointed as head coach of the South African U19 team in early 2023, Mthembu has embraced the responsibility with enthusiasm. Transitioning from player to coach is never easy, but her deep understanding of the game and connection with young athletes have been crucial in building a competitive team.

“My role as head coach has been an incredible experience. I’m learning a lot and truly enjoying the coaching journey. There are challenges, especially in decision-making, but the reward comes from working with an incredible management team and talented, motivated players.”

She credits her coaching staff of Phumza Maweni, Denise Mthembu, and Ntsiki Mashalaba for creating a positive and structured environment. “My management team has been nothing short of amazing. The way we handle situations together is truly remarkable. The players feed off the positive spirit we create.”

With the World Cup fast approaching, the KZN-native is focused on fine-tuning her squad. The next phase of preparations includes participation in the 2025 Telkom Netball Championship, where all 25 identified players will compete at the highest domestic level. Training camps and remote coaching sessions will also form part of the build-up.

“I’m really happy with the players I’m currently working with, and I’m excited to see those who will be joining us at the camps. Selecting the final team for the World Cup will be difficult, but it’s a positive challenge to have.”

As a player, former isiZulu teacher Mthembu was known for her leadership and resilience on the court. Now, as a coach, she is instilling those same qualities in her squad. Her dream? To ensure the Baby Proteas go to Gibraltar as a well-prepared, competitive unit ready to take on the world.

“The biggest dream for me is to help each player experience the greatest World Cup by sharing all the knowledge and lessons they need to succeed. We aim to perform at our best, taking each game as it comes and tackling every challenge with a positive mindset.

“It won’t be easy, but with the incredible support from Netball South Africa, we will give it our all.”

With Mthembu at the helm and a talented squad in the making, the Baby Proteas are on an exciting trajectory. Their triumph in Jamaica was just the beginning.
