Photos of the week: orangutans, Senegal skateboarding and more
In a photo selection, The National gathered images of events from different countries. In the village of Pemangkat in the Indonesian part of Borneo island, six orangutans were rescued, including two nursing infants. The animals found themselves in an area of forest fires. In Dakar, the capital of Senegal, a representative of the Senegalese Roller Sports and Skateboarding Federation performed a skateboard trick.
Fires, floods and the aftermath of strikes
In the city of Bukavu in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, a fire engulfed a school. At least 14 children died in a stampede. In Nepal, survivors were sought after deadly flash floods, while Tribhuvan Hospital in Kathmandu displayed photographs of people considered missing.
The selection also includes images of the aftermath of an Israeli strike on a house in Khan Younis in southern Gaza and housing damaged in a strike in the Al-Rimal district of Gaza City. Children at a camp for displaced people in Gaza City watched a cartoon shown as part of the mobile Little Wings Cinema initiative.

Among the other photographs are the ancient ruins of Syria’s Palmyra, a graduation ceremony at the Mamun Tahiri Institute of Medical Sciences in Afghanistan’s Kandahar, and a traditional Palestinian wedding in Birzeit, north of Ramallah.
Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk returned the serve of Czech athlete Linda Noskova at the US Open. The photographs also captured the eruption of Anak Krakatau volcano in the Sunda Strait, salt harvesting in India’s Tamil Nadu state, and training by the SOS Mediterranee team on a rescue boat in the central Mediterranean near Sicily.
