SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has shared more details on his time with Black Leopards in the early 2000s.
After three years with Hellenic, the 60-year-old joined Lidoda Duvha but only coached one season before moving to Moroka Swallows. Speaking on Sports Night Amplified, Hunt recounted his days at Leopards and also touched on his friendship with the club owner David Thidiela.
“The Leopard story is fantastic. David took a chance on me, I took a chance with him. I never believed in David, but I used those local boys and they were fantastic, we filled that place up,” he said.
Gavin Hunt helped Leopards finish in the top 8 in his first season
“David was our security guard when I played for Hellenic in the 80s. When I used to come up here, he used to be called security going into the townships, and obviously he was in the police force and he looked after us and I got to know him then and ja, I ended up being his coach in 2000,” the SuperSport coach added.
Gavin Hunt said it was an honour to coach in a very unfamiliar territory.
“Taking local boys, who never travelled and played across the country and take a team and fill a stadium was unbelievable. It’s so sad that a team like that is not in the PSL,” he added.
After leaving Leopards, Gavin Hunt joined Moroka Swallows where he won the Nedbank Cup in 2004. His biggest success was with SuperSport United three years later in which he guided them to three PSL titles in a row.
