Nwogu Lauds Aluo’s NNL Reforms, Says League Is Turning Around

Federal lawmaker representing Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala Federal Constituency, Hon. (Dr) Matthew Nwogu, has commended the progress recorded in the Nigeria National League (NNL), describing the second-tier competition as an important platform for developing Nigerian football.

Nwogu made the assessment on Tuesday during a condolence visit to the NNL Chairman, George Aluo, over the death of his mother, Ezinne Bernadette Aluo, who died on July 11.

While commiserating with the Aluo family, Nwogu said the deceased lived a fulfilled life and left behind children who were making meaningful contributions in their respective fields.

“Mama was a devout Catholic who, with her late husband, raised children who Umuohiagu, Ngor Okpala and the entire country are proud of. We have lost a great woman and may God accept her gentle soul,” he said.

Nwogu, however, used the occasion to assess the state of the NNL, saying he had followed developments in the second-tier league and was impressed by the changes under Aluo’s leadership.

“I have been following what you are doing as chairman of NNL and I am proud that it is a worthy son of Umuohiagu, Ngor Okpala that has turned the league around,” Nwogu said.

The lawmaker’s comments highlight the growing importance of the NNL as a pathway for clubs and players seeking to progress to the top level of Nigerian football.

The second-tier league has historically served as a feeder system for the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), but has faced challenges including funding, infrastructure, club administration and inconsistent organisation.

Nwogu’s assessment suggests that efforts to improve the competition could have a wider impact on the development of players and clubs and strengthen the structure of domestic football.

He also urged the Aluo family to remain strong following the loss of their matriarch, describing her as a woman whose upbringing of her children had left a lasting legacy.

Responding, Aluo thanked Nwogu for making time to visit the family, particularly during what he described as a busy political period.

Aluo also acknowledged the lawmaker’s support for members of the Umuohiagu autonomous community, particularly through financial assistance and empowerment initiatives for people facing economic hardship.
