North West villagers cry foul over nepotism

Residents from 109 villages under the Moses Kotane Local Municipality staged a protest march against endemic nepotism and corruption in the municipality.

The municipality is notorious for corruption and nepotism. Almost every councillor and senior official has a relative or two employed in the municipality.

The protesters demanded that all residents get job opportunities.

Recently, a list of politically connected individuals, some related to officials and politicians, earmarked to be hired irregularly by the municipality, was exposed.

However, the municipality vehemently denied there was an irregular employment practice.

Grievances raised

The marchers presented a memorandum of grievances to the acting mayor, Tshetlhane Dithoti.

The municipality confirmed that a formal memorandum was handed over by the Moses Kotane Anti-Corruption Movement, adding that the march was “legally and lawfully approved”.

The municipality was given seven days to respond and the municipal leadership agreed to the deadline.
