Nintendo finally announces built-in voice chat, called GameChat

Nearly 25 years after Xbox Live popularized built-in voice chat, Nintendo is introducing GameChat with the Switch 2, allowing players to communicate during online gameplay, notably in Mario Kart World.

GameChat, accessible via the Switch 2’s new C button, offers a streamlined interface for screen sharing, microphone control, and optional video via the Switch 2 Camera. The console’s integrated microphone, equipped with noise reduction, is a welcome addition, though real-world performance remains to be tested.

However, the GameChat demo revealed potential performance issues. Voice chat itself appeared functional, supporting up to 12 participants. Screen sharing and video chat, conversely, exhibited significant lag, rendering gameplay streams choppy and potentially hindering collaborative play. Video from the Switch 2 Camera was also described as low-quality, reminiscent of outdated webcams.

Furthermore, the interface design, featuring large tiles for participant feeds, may prove cumbersome, particularly on the Switch 2’s 7.9-inch screen. This could detract from the gameplay experience, especially in handheld mode.

Nintendo has implemented comprehensive parental controls, allowing for granular management of children’s online interactions, including voice and video chat. Yet, the core functionalities of GameChat are not novel, mirroring features found in platforms like Discord. This raises questions about the performance discrepancies observed so close to the Switch 2’s June 5th launch.

Nintendo has until June 5th to refine GameChat. For many consumers, these technical shortcomings may be inconsequential. However, the company’s decision to offer GameChat for free until March 2026 suggests an awareness of its developmental state. Ideally, this grace period will allow Nintendo to bridge the two-decade gap in online gaming infrastructure.
