We’ve got some bad news for all those still subscribed to Netflix, and especially bad news for anyone who’s a bit late to the Netflix train. The streaming giant has quietly hiked its subscription fees overnight – and has yet to inform all its customers of the change. These aren’t minimal hikes, either, with some going up by as much as 20%.
A low blow from Netflix
Even with a Premium subscription at hand, Netflix has yet to warn us of the change, instead updating its website to reflect the new prices, which affect the Mobile, Standard, and Premium tiers. Netflix will stick with the R100/m pricing for its 720p-only ‘Basic’ plan going forward. That’s something, at least.
According to MyBroadband, however, some customers have already received an email warning them of the coming price change. The difference appears to be those customers who will be billed before 7 June 2025, when the hike will go into effect, and will enjoy another month at the original prices.
Customers whose billing date falls after the 7 June deadline, as well as newcomers to the streaming platform, will be subjected to the new, more expensive fees starting immediately. If that’s you, here’s what it costs to sign up for the service going forward:
- Mobile – R60/m (up from R50/m)
- Basic – R100/m (no change)
- Standard – R180/m (up from R160/m)
- Premium – R230/m (up from R200/m)
Considering this is only the second price hike since Netflix arrived in the country, with the first taking place back in October 2021, and involving a similar R30/m increase for the Premium plan, perhaps we should keep our complaints to ourselves.
In any case, seeing as how most Netflix originals rarely ever live long enough to see their conclusions, it might be time to make do with other streamers, unless rewatching Breaking Bad for the umpteenth time is a must.
