The upcoming season of Cameroon’s professional football championship, MTN Elite One, will begin on December 7, 2024, with a derby between Stade Renard de Melong and Aigle Royale du Moungo two teams from the Moungo department. The remaining seven matches are scheduled for the following day.
As the first matchday approaches, several clubs have made their ambitions for the season clear. Leading the pack is the reigning champion, Victoria United of Limbe, which has embarked on an extensive recruitment drive to secure young talents from across the country. However, recent results suggest the team is struggling to regain its winning form.
If victory for Victoria United appears uncertain, the same cannot be said for Colombe du Sud, widely regarded as the favorite for the new season. The club has demonstrated its intent to secure its first league title, backed by impressive results. Colombe recently claimed both the Cameroon Cup and the Super Cup, defeating Victoria United 2-1 in the latter.
Colombe also stands out for its sound management. Unlike many clubs in the MTN Elite One, it has avoided salary arrears, thanks to strong financial backing from elite figures in the South region. The arrival of coach Richard Towa has further boosted the team’s performance, positioning Colombe as a serious contender.
Coton Sport of Garoua is another team to watch. The “Cotton Growers” are hungry for redemption after a trophyless season. Despite leading the playoff standings for several matchdays, Coton Sport finished third in MTN Elite One last year. This underwhelming performance has prompted the club’s management to reassess and strengthen their strategy. They’ve promised to come back stronger—a pledge consistent with Coton Sport’s longstanding reputation for consistency and competitiveness.
