Morocco Reaffirms Support for Yemen’s Sovereignty and Stability

Rabat – Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita held a phone call on Friday with Yemen’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs Afrah Al-Zouba to discuss bilateral relations and developments in Yemen.

During the call, the two officials discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between Morocco and Yemen and activate existing mechanisms for bilateral collaboration. They also exchanged views on developments in Yemen and other issues of mutual interest.

Al-Zouba briefed Bourita on the latest situation in Yemen amid what she described as a recent escalation by the Houthi militia along the country’s western coast and in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

She affirmed Yemen’s right and constitutional responsibility to protect its citizens and secure its coasts, ports, and territorial waters, according to Yemen’s official news agency Saba.

Al-Zouba also commended Morocco’s support for Yemen’s constitutional legitimacy, unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

She recalled Morocco’s participation in the Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognized government following the Houthi takeover of state institutions. She also commended Morocco’s continued support for Yemen’s state institutions.

The Yemeni minister also welcomed Morocco’s support for Yemeni citizens, including scholarships for Yemeni students, and expressed interest in expanding cooperation between the two countries.

For his part, Bourita reaffirmed Morocco’s support for Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council and its legitimate government, as well as Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

He said Morocco stands with Yemen in protecting its security and sovereignty and confronting threats targeting the country. Bourita also stressed Morocco’s support for efforts to strengthen Yemen’s state institutions and promote security and stability in Yemen and the wider region.

At the end of the call, Bourita invited Al-Zouba to visit Morocco as part of efforts to continue consultations and coordination and further strengthen bilateral relations.

Yemen has faced prolonged political and security instability since the Houthis seized control of the capital, Sanaa, in 2014. The conflict later drew regional involvement, with Saudi Arabia leading a coalition that intervened in support of Yemen’s internationally recognized government in 2015.

The conflict has also affected security around the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key maritime route connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.
