Baku, May 17, AZERTAC

Congo’s Minister of State for Construction, Urban Planning and Housing Claude Alphonse Nsilou stated that the Republic of the Congo is currently preparing a ten-year urbanization and living environment plan covering the period 2026–2036.

Speaking at a ministerial roundtable held within the framework of the 13th Session of the UN World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, the Minister noted that the country is undergoing an unprecedented urbanization process, with more than one million new residents moving to cities each year.

He said the capital Kinshasa, with a population of approximately 17 million, is among the fastest-growing megacities globally.

The Minister highlighted that the country faces a housing shortage of around nine million units and that the government has declared urbanization a national priority. He added that the upcoming plan aims to transform urbanization into a driver of economic, social, and environmental development.

The strategy envisages proactive urban planning, large-scale urban development projects, and the development of small and medium-sized cities along economic corridors.
