Mid-month Petrol Price Predictions Foretell A Nearly R1 Price Decrease For All This April

As we edge closer to the first Wednesday of April, the Central Energy Fund (CEF) has supplied the country with the mid-month petrol and diesel price predictions – and we’re glad to say they look just as hopeful as they did a week ago. Rather than foretelling a price hike – as has been the case for most of 2025 – the CEF predicts yet another price drop for all grades of petroleum-based fuels this April.

Good news, everyone!

It’s worth remembering that the CEF’s figures below are nothing more than predictions – and that the country’s petrol pumps will show a different story come the first Wednesday of April (2 April). The CEF’s predictions do, however, offer residents the most accurate representation of the coming changes. The official decision lies with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE).

The CEF, a state-owned energy company that reports directly to the DMRE, tracks the various economic factors that can affect South Africa’s fuel prices. Those are the Rand/US Dollar exchange rate, as well as the price of unrefined oil globally. These, in conjunction with the DMRE’s Self-Adjusting Slate Levy are the biggest deciders of the price of fuel locally.

We’ll keep you informed of any movements from the CEF until we’re officially out of the clear – which is typically the last Friday of any given month. With a little under two weeks until D-Day, it is highly unlikely we will see a massive shift from the predicted price cuts to the prices on the pumps, meaning most drivers will save on their monthly fuel bills. Still, never say never.

Here are the diesel and petrol price predictions (so far) for April 2025:

  • Petrol 93: decrease of 82 cents per litre (R0.82)
  • Petrol 95: decrease of 95 cents per litre (R0.95)
  • Diesel 0.05%: decrease of 91 cents per litre (R0.91)
  • Diesel 0.005%: decrease of 93 cents per litre (R0.93)
  • Illuminating Paraffin: decrease of 87 cents per litre (R0.87)
