A silent, statue‑like fan reignited Patrice Lumumba’s memory at DR Congo’s World Cup comeback, creating a powerful moment of unity and tension before the team’s late equalizer.

The first match of DR Congo’s national team at the World Cup against Portugal was a historic event. It was not only the country’s second appearance in the tournament – the first since 1974, when Congo was still named Zaire – but also the moment when a stoppage-time goal by Yoane Wissa gave the team its first point on the world stage.

When Les Léopards took to the field, it seemed something was missing. The reason was that attention was focused not only on the players in the famous light-blue kit, but also on the informal 12th player: Michel Kuka Mboladinga, known by the alias Lumumba Vea or Lumumba Lives.

This pose is a tribute to Patrice Émery Lumumba, the first Prime Minister of Congo after gaining independence from Belgium in June 1960 – a man whom Mboladinga bears a striking resemblance to. Lumumba was removed from power less than seven months after voicing his stance, in January 1961, at the age of 35.

More than six decades later Patrice Lumumba remains one of the most revered heroes of Congolese history. And thanks to his famous on-field ritual, Mboladinga helps preserve his legacy through “the beautiful game” – football.

Another multidimensional story is Lumumba as a symbol of Congolese nationalism in the swirl of the fight against Belgian colonialism, which began with King Leopold II founding the Congo Free State in 1885.

He became the epicenter of the struggle for freedom, and a quote by Malcolm X, describing Lumumba as “the most outstanding Black man to ever walk the African continent,” underscores his influence. It was also noted that Lumumba was not only a politician but a symbol of the national movement and the people’s dignity.

Three months after those events, the armed forces led by Mobutu Sese Seko arrested Lumumba and sent him to Katanga, where he was tortured and killed. After the execution, the body was initially buried in a shallow grave, but later it was dismembered, and the remains dissolved in acid. The only known artifact was a tooth with a golden crown, which bore the name of the Belgian policeman Gérard Soete – who confessed to being involved in dismembering and dissolving the body – and which had been kept for 39 years until his death in 2000. Later the tooth was returned to Lumumba’s family and reburied in 2022.

Today, memory of Patrice Lumumba is honored in a special mausoleum in Kinshasa, where beside the tomb stands a monument with his right arm raised in the same gesture as Mboladinga; it was this pose that brought him fame and influence.

The leading role of Mboladinga at the 2026 World Cup was notable – he appeared at DR Congo’s match against Colombia in Zapopan, Mexico. Part of the charm of his gesture is the symbolism: it is not only a tribute to the past, but also a unifying element for people during football competitions. He himself admitted: Believe it or not, but I train; I can train 20 days a month, but I also need rest.

The heat and humidity of North America do not deter Mboladinga – he arrives at matches in a suit and shoes, paying no mind to the conditions.

Yet the Congolese team did everything possible to acknowledge him as part of the official delegation, even drawing the president’s attention with a request to include him in the squad.

On the field, Les Léopards were just over 90 minutes away from lifting more than 116 million Congolese to true ecstasy. Fans from across the region will support the team, and on the country’s destiny maps, a surge of joy will echo across Congo.

And although Mboladinga was not always physically present at every match, his impact on the tournament keeps the spirit of Congo high. He promises to stay in shape and continue his unique tribute as long as the national team fights to return to the knockout stages.
