Banyana Banyana midfielder Linda Motlhalo is back at Glasgow City, rejoining the club after a brief spell with NWSL side Racing Louisville. The 26-year-old has signed a deal that will keep her at Petershill Park until the summer of 2026, reinforcing the squad as they push for silverware this season.
Motlhalo previously played a crucial role for Glasgow City, making 34 appearances and scoring four goals after arriving from Swedish side Djurgårdens IF in early 2023.
One of her most memorable contributions was in the 2022/23 title decider, where she was instrumental in the build-up to Lauren Davidson’s dramatic last-minute winner at Ibrox.

Reflecting on her return, she shared her excitement: “I’m so happy to be back—Glasgow feels like a second home. When I left, Leanne and the staff told me the door would always be open, and when the call came, I didn’t think twice. I told my agent, ‘That’s where I’m going.’ I know it’ll be demanding to catch up after the off-season, but I’ve been following the team, and I love the direction they’re heading in.”
“I’ve been training at the JVW Academy with Janine. She’s been amazing in helping me stay in shape. She’s always supported me in my journey with Glasgow City, and I really appreciate her guidance.”
South African International, Linda Motlhalo
Motlhalo has been keeping fit back in South Africa with the help of a familiar face—Banyana Banyana legend and former Glasgow City teammate Janine van Wyk.
Her return comes at a pivotal time, both for club and country. With the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on the horizon, regular game time at a competitive level will ensure she stays in contention for coach Desiree Ellis’ side and be ready to play a key role for South Africa.
Having already earned 83 caps for Banyana Banyana, Motlhalo remains one of the national team’s most experienced and influential players.

We’ve seen a steady rise in the number of players from the SA senior women’s team sealing lucrative contracts abroad and that has had quite the positive impact on Banyana. Motlhalo, Thembi Kgatlana, Hilda Magaia, Jermaine Seoposenwe are just some stars plying their trade abroad that have boosted Ellis’ side of late.
Having played in the U.S., Sweden, and Scotland, Motlhalo’s consistent presence abroad not only strengthens her individual game but also raises the profile of South African players in global leagues. She sets an example for young footballers back home, showing the value of international experience in taking one’s game to the next level.
Glasgow City head coach Leanne Ross is thrilled to have her back in the squad:
“Linda is a player I know well, and when the opportunity arose to bring her back, it was an easy decision. She adds undeniable quality on the pitch and a fantastic personality off it. As we push towards our goals this season, her experience will be invaluable.”
For the Glasgow City faithful, Motlhalo’s return is something to celebrate, and she hasn’t forgotten their unwavering support.
“The fans are incredible. Even after I left, they kept sending me messages. They’re like family, and I appreciate them so much.”
