LiMA Sends Five Students to China

MONROVIA, Liberia, September 3, 2026 — The Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) has awarded scholarships to five Liberian students to pursue advanced maritime studies at Shanghai Maritime University in China.

The beneficiaries, comprising three males and two females, were selected through what the Authority described as an independent and competitive vetting process.

They are expected to depart Liberia for China on September 9, 2026, to begin their studies in maritime-related disciplines.

According to LiMA, the scholarships were awarded under a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2025 between the Authority and Shanghai Maritime University.

A key component of the agreement provides scholarship opportunities for qualified Liberian students to pursue degree programs and specialized technical training in the maritime sector.

Shanghai Maritime University is a major Chinese institution specializing in shipping, logistics, transportation and other maritime-related disciplines.

LiMA said the scholarship program forms part of its broader capacity-building strategy aimed at developing a new generation of trained Liberian maritime professionals.

The Authority said that under the leadership of Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighe Sr., it has placed increased emphasis on professional training, capacity development and international partnerships as part of efforts to strengthen Liberia’s maritime sector.

LiMA said the students’ training in China is expected to provide them with specialized knowledge and technical skills that could contribute to the development of Liberia’s maritime industry upon their return.

The Authority expressed hope that the beneficiaries will eventually apply their training and expertise to strengthen institutional capacity and support the country’s broader maritime development efforts.

The latest scholarships form part of LiMA’s ongoing partnership with international institutions to expand educational and professional opportunities for Liberians seeking careers in the maritime sector.
