Lenovo reimagines laptop power with the Yoga Solar PC Concept

While the idea of solar-powered laptops isn’t new, Lenovo’s Yoga Solar PC Concept at MWC 2025 feels like a timely revival. With advancements in photovoltaic technology, it’s surprising more manufacturers haven’t explored this concept.

The Yoga Solar PC Concept, a 14-inch clamshell design, is remarkably portable, weighing 2.6 pounds and measuring under 0.6 inches thick. It mirrors Lenovo’s standard Yoga line in specifications, featuring an OLED display, up to 32GB of RAM, a 50.2 WHr battery, and a 2MP IR webcam.

The star of the show, however, is the integrated solar panels on the lid. Utilizing Back Contact Cell technology, the panels achieve a 24% solar energy conversion rate, comparable to high-end home solar systems. Dynamic Solar Tracking further optimizes energy capture by adjusting panel settings.

Lenovo claims the Yoga Solar PC can generate an hour of video playback from just 20 minutes of sunlight. Impressively, even indoor ambient light (0.3 watts) can contribute to battery charging. A dedicated app tracks the panels’ energy absorption.

Despite its functionality, Lenovo currently has no plans for commercial production. The concept, however, feels surprisingly robust. The photovoltaic cells, protected by a glass or plastic layer, add a unique aesthetic.

The primary challenge, and likely the reason for limited solar laptop adoption, is the practicality of standalone solar arrays. These offer greater versatility compared to integrated panels. Nevertheless, Lenovo’s Yoga Solar PC Concept is a compelling and polished demonstration of solar-powered computing that deserves attention.
