Lagos Set to Host Ghana, Sierra Leone as Nigeria Launches New T20 Cricket Series

Nigeria’s cricket calendar is set to get busier as the country prepares to welcome Ghana, Sierra Leone, and a second home side, Nigeria A, for a newly launched competition, the Nigeria T20 Quadrangular Series, running from September 21 to 27 at the TBS Cricket Oval in Lagos.

The tournament was unveiled by the Nigeria Cricket Federation over the weekend as part of a broader push to expand the country’s cricketing fixtures.

With Nigeria fielding two separate squads, the flagship Yellow Greens team is expected to use the tournament as a key stepping stone in their build-up to bigger international assignments ahead.

The team has been training under Zimbabwean high-performance manager Stephen Mangongo, who took over the role in May after agreeing to a three-year contract with the federation.

He succeeded Kenyan tactician Steve Tikolo, who stepped down after guiding the side for more than three years.

This upcoming series marks Mangongo’s second tournament in charge, following his earlier outing at the Namibia Tri-Series back in June.

Beyond serving as preparation, the Quadrangular Series doubles as a warm-up for the Yellow Greens’ participation in the 2028 T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional C Qualifier, set for Abuja between October 18 and 25.

That qualifier will pit Nigeria against Gambia, Lesotho, Mozambique, Uganda, and Zambia, with only the top two finishers advancing.

Those two qualifying nations will then progress to a regional final next year, where the ultimate prize on offer is a coveted spot at the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
