In a financial inclusion milestone, Kazang, the prepaid value-added services (VAS) and card acquiring business within JSE-listed fintech Lesaka Technologies, has announced that consumers are now able to pay for their DStv subscriptions using a debit or credit card at Kazang Pay merchants nationwide.
Kazang Pay allows micro merchants to sell a range of prepaid products and services and accept card payments from a single POS device. Kazang has enabled merchants to accept cash payments for major billers for several years, but this is the first time that consumers can pay their DStv subscriptions with a card at their local Kazang merchant.
Says Kazang Executive Head: Growth and International, Michael Wright: “Since we launched our Kazang Pay terminals, we have seen a sharp increase in card purchases in our merchant base. Enabling card payments for bills is a logical next step in our journey of helping merchants offer convenient services to their customers.
Financial Inclusion and Convenience
“Being able to pay bills such as DStv subscriptions by card for free is a major step towards financial inclusion for customers who usually need to pay with cash. Customers will be able to use their card to safely pay at a vendor in their community and be instantly connected, rather than needing to pay for transport to a formal retailer or having to draw cash to pay their bill.”
DStv card payments are now available at Kazang Pay-enabled merchants nationwide. Kazang operates a network of around 90,000 VAS devices processing approximately 3 million transactions daily—around 60,000 of which can accept card payments.
Kazang Pay has made it affordable for micro merchants to accept card payments. The device and service has low acceptance fees and terminal hardware rental is free for those that meet a modest transaction threshold each month. Wider acceptance of card payments is reducing cash risks for micro merchants and customers alike.
Says Wright: “The strategic relation between Kazang and Multichoice allows us to offer ‘DStv Pay by Card’ to Kazang vendors and customers for free. The fact that it’s free to both vendors and customers really changes the game of card payments since no player currently offers a card payment product that is free.”
