Kaizer Chiefs inspired by unveiling CAF Champions League trophy

As Kaizer Chiefs return to continental interclub competition, the timing of the new CAF Champions League trophy reveal couldn’t had been more poignant.

The Glamour Boys, fresh from their Nedbank Cup triumph that guaranteed them a place to compete on the continent, taking on the challenges of the CAF Confederation Cup, the unveiling of the prestigious trophy in Johannesburg will undoubtedly serve as a powerful motivator for the team.

Significant buzz

Although Amakhosi won’t be competing in the CAF Champions League, the club’s return to continental competition via the CAF Confederation Cup has generated significant buzz over the past few weeks.

Having come close to lifting the CAF Champions League trophy in the 2021 final against Al Ahly, the new design serves as an added incentive for the team.

“The CAF Interclub Trophy Reveal is more than just a ceremony; it’s a platform that brings together the best of African club football,” said Marketing and Commercial Director, Jessica Motaung.

“By celebrating our clubs’ achievements, we’re promoting a culture of excellence and competitiveness that will drive African football forward.”

Motaung reflected on the remarkable growth and progress African football has made over the years, citing the passion and dedication of fans as a key driver.

“Our fans are some of the most loyal and enthusiastic in the world,” she said.

“Their love for the sport is unmatched, and their energy and creativity bring African football to life.”

Makes its debut

Speaking as the Africa Club Association deputy chairperson, Motaung said that the relationship between CAF and the ACA is an important conduit to ensure that clubs become a key stakeholders in maintaining a steady upward trajectory for the sustainability of club football in a commercial environment.

“It’s a vital role for both organisations to promote the interests of African clubs and driving the development of club football on the continent,” she said, adding, “We are committed to ensuring that both organisation provide a platform for clubs to share best practices, address common challenges, and collaborate on initiatives that drive growth and innovation.”

The new trophy will make its debut when Mamelodi Sundowns take on Pyramids FC in the CAF Champions League final.

CAF’s Head of TV and Communications, Luxolo September, revealed that 30% of the design pays homage to the previous trophy, while 70% is a bold new innovation.

“To be the best in the world you have to reinvent and I think the new trophy is a clear symbol of this, a symbol of CAF keeping to tradition but reinventing itself and modernising the trophy,” September commented.

He concluded, “It was important that we made the product look better, appealing and easy on the eye so today was a bold step towards this.”
