Jonathan Sees Off Ex-Sierra Leone President Koroma After 2 Years In Nigeria

Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday bade farewell to former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma as he returned home after spending more than two years in Nigeria.

Koroma had been in Nigeria since January 2024 after leaving Sierra Leone following treason charges connected to the November 2023 attacks in the capital, Freetown.

The Sierra Leonean government, however, dropped the charges against the former president two months ago, paving the way for his return to the country.

Jonathan, who saw Koroma off on Sunday, described his departure as an important moment for reconciliation and renewed hope in Sierra Leone.

In a statement, the former Nigerian president said Nigeria had served as Koroma’s “home away from home” during his stay and expressed gratitude that he and others were able to provide friendship, support and solidarity.

“This morning, I had the pleasure of seeing off my dear friend and brother, His Excellency President Ernest Bai Koroma, as he begins his journey home to Sierra Leone,” Jonathan said.

He said efforts were made behind the scenes to encourage dialogue and engagement with the Sierra Leonean authorities and create the conditions for Koroma’s safe and dignified return.

“Nigeria was his home away from home for over two years, and I am grateful that we were able to offer friendship, support and solidarity during that period,” Jonathan said.

“Working quietly with others, we encouraged dialogue and engagement with the Sierra Leonean authorities to help create the conditions for his safe and dignified return.”

Jonathan said he was particularly pleased that the former Sierra Leonean leader was returning to Freetown, expressing hope that his homecoming would contribute to peace and reconciliation in the country.

“As we say farewell today, I am particularly happy that he is returning home to Freetown,” he said.

“President Koroma, I wish you a safe journey, peace of mind and every success in this new chapter. May your return be a moment of renewed hope and reconciliation for you, your family and the people of Sierra Leone. “Safe travels, my brother. Sierra Leone welcomes you home.”
