IO Interactive unveils 007 First Light in new trailer

The developer behind Hitman: World of Assassination, IO Interactive, has finally offered a first look at its take on James Bond. A new trailer for the game, now officially titled 007 First Light, debuted during Sony’s Summer State of Play on June 4. IO Interactive initially announced its “Project 007” back in November 2020, revealing only recently that it would be a “James Bond origin story.”

Given Hitman’s signature 007-esque elements—like using disguises, infiltrating enemy bases, and deploying gadgets—IO Interactive seemed a natural fit for the franchise. The initial trailer for 007 First Light focuses on the narrative, showcasing early moments from this new Bond’s career, including his training in the Navy.

Many classic Bond games have often closely followed existing film plots or character likenesses, such as GoldenEye 007 adapting its film’s key moments or James Bond 007: NightFire featuring Pierce Brosnan’s likeness. However, IO Interactive is taking a distinctly different path, crafting an original Bond origin story and creating a unique version of the character not tied to any specific film actor.

The future of the James Bond film franchise itself remains somewhat uncertain. Longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson handed off creative control to Amazon MGM Studios and producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman in March 2025. They have yet to announce a new film or cast a new James Bond, following Daniel Craig’s tenure.

IO Interactive has confirmed that 007 First Light will be released in 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
