Monnapule Saleng‘s parents are concerned after the Orlando Pirates star has reportedly fallen into depression.
The 26-year-old winger has not played for the Buccaneers in three months, and the reasons for this remain unclear. In an exclusive interview with Sunday World, Saleng’s parents discussed his situation at Pirates.
“I’m in pain”, Saleng’s father told the publication. “He is the one who cares for us at home, and seeing his profession in such a state crushes my heart. I wish he could tell me what is really bothering him before it’s too late.”
The father of the Orlando Pirates star said the issue with the contract. It has been rumoured that Monnapule Saleng was underpaid by the Buccaneers despite being one of the top performers at the team.
“The problem is the contract. We would want him to stick with Pirates because it is one of the biggest clubs in the country,” Thabo said.
Monnapule Saleng now with Bafana Bafana
Saleng’s childhood friend Boikanyo Maine said Pirates should offer Saleng a better salary.
“If he was not an important asset, Bafana could not have called him. We are requesting that Pirates consider what he wants. It’s unfair, imagine getting R70 000 but your contribution in most of the matches speaks volumes, while somebody [else] is getting R500 000,” Maine added,
Monnapule Saleng has not yet publicly addressed his situation at Pirates. He is currently with Bafana Bafana as they attempt to qualify for the CHAN competition.
Monnapule Saleng has played seven games this season for Pirates, scoring four times.
