Igniting a New Era – Khanyisa Chawane Leads Spar Proteas to New Heights

Just a few months into her captaincy role, Khanyisa “KC” Chawane is inspiring the Spar Proteas with her bold leadership while uniting the team, breaking barriers, and paving the way for a bright future in South African netball.

Chawane seems instinctively aware of the key leadership trait that it’s about more than just wearing the armband. It’s about inspiring a team through every high, and every low.

Since taking over from former captain Bongiwe Msomi, Chawane has driven the Spar Proteas to remarkable achievements, from clinching the Africa Netball Cup, going down 3-nil in a tough but instructive away assignment to Jamaica before recording a historic win over England on their home turf, culminating in a commendable runner-up finish at the Vitality Nations Cup.

“I’ve enjoyed every moment of this journey! The highs and the lows with the team have helped me grow as a leader. A career highlight so far has been coming into the Nations Cup as the team to look out for—and the team to worry about! I still relish being part of this new team that beat England in England.”

Central to her success is the unwavering support from coach Jenny van Dyk and assistant coach Zanele Mdodana. “They are great leaders and visionaries who fuel the team with so much passion and energy, more than I do. They make me excited not just to play, but also to lead the group,” she explains. It’s evident that their collective vision has fostered a culture of enthusiasm and mutual reliance that has become the backbone of the team.

Despite recent transitions, including the retirements of key players, Phumza Maweni and Msomi, and the integration of new coaching staff—the Proteas have maintained impressive momentum.

Born in Tzaneen, Chawane praises the seamless development plan orchestrated by Netball South Africa under President Cecilia Molokwane’s leadership.

“You don’t see much of a gap after those players and coaches have left us. The team is in a good space and in good hands, which shows the incredible work happening behind the scenes.”

While the Proteas narrowly lost to England in a thrilling Nations Cup final in London: 61-55 they entered the final unbeaten in three matches, overcoming African rivals Malawi and Uganda and delivering a stunning win against England along the way.

Reflecting on the tournament, the skipper emphasises, “Every player must be in sync for the team to truly excel. We constantly have to be clinical and consistent as a group.”

She is also buoyed by the fact that the gap between leading African teams and top-tier netball nations like New Zealand, Australia, Jamaica, and England is rapidly closing.

“Gone are the days when we lost by large margins. Now we give them something to think about, and that gives us confidence that we’re on the right track.”

Beyond her national duties, the former Free State Crinums star has embraced new challenges abroad. Last year, she signed with the Cardiff Dragons in Wales, a move that has broadened her horizons and enhanced her game.

“I’m loving every moment here. Everyone is lovely, and the training and setup really improve the way that I play.” Reflecting on the contrasting demands of different competitions, Chawane notes:

“In the Super League, we play every weekend, which allows for proper recovery and preparation. In contrast, the Telkom Netball League features power weeks where recovery and consistent performance become much tougher.”

Off the court, Chawane is a beacon of inspiration for young girls dreaming of representing South Africa in green and gold. Her advice is simple yet profound: “Never stop dreaming and always believe that things will work out. Don’t let your background or circumstances cloud your dream. Believe in God, and trust that He can make your dreams come true.”

She extends this message to the Baby Proteas, urging them to seize every opportunity as they prepare for the Netball World Youth Cup in Gibraltar.

“Be ready for anything because anything can happen. Make use of every chance you get to show the world what South Africa can do!”

In just a few months as captain, Khanyisa “KC” Chawane has not only led by example but has also laid a robust foundation for the future of South African netball. With passion, resilience, and a clear vision, she is proving that the future of the Spar Proteas is indeed bright.
