HAITI: Don Bosco School in Fort-Liberté graduates 90 youth from 8 courses
Many Salesian provinces, organizations support work of school
(MissionNewswire) The Don Bosco Technical Vocational School, located in Fort-Liberté, Haiti, held a graduation ceremony for 90 youth from eight different vocational courses. The event brought together the graduates and their families, members of the Salesian educational community, local authorities, teachers, and numerous guests.
Against a national backdrop of profound economic and social difficulties, this ceremony symbolized the opportunity these youth now have to build a better future for themselves, gain independence and become key players in the development of their community.
During the celebration, Father Jean-Paul Mésidor, rector, thanked the generosity and commitment of the many Salesian provinces and organizations that support the work of the Don Bosco School, mentioning Via Don Bosco in Belgium, the Salesian Mission Office in Spain, Mission Don Bosco in Italy, and Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco.
A Salesian noted, “The Salesian community in Fort-Liberté remains firmly committed to offering youth the education and training necessary to find and retain long-term employment. The hope is that they become contributing members of their communities and aid in the development of their country.”
Salesian missionaries began working in Haiti in 1935 in response to the Haitian government’s request for a professional school. Since then, Salesian missionaries have expanded their work to include 11 main educational centers and more than 200 schools across the country. CDAM opened its door to youth in 1983.
The 11 main centers each include several primary and secondary schools, vocational training centers, and other programs for street children and youth in need. Salesian programs are located throughout Haiti, including in the cities of Port-au-Prince, Fort-Liberté, Cap-Haïtien, Les Cayes and Gressier. Today, Salesian missionaries in Haiti provide the largest source of education outside of the Haitian government.
