Google Photos is marking its 10th anniversary with a significant revamp of its in-app editor, deeply integrating artificial intelligence to enhance photo editing capabilities.

The redesigned Google Photos editor now incorporates several AI-powered features previously exclusive to the Pixel 9’s Magic Editor. Among these is Auto Frame, which intelligently suggests optimal crops for your images. Should a suggested crop require extending the image beyond its original boundaries, the AI will seamlessly generate new content to fill those areas.
Another Pixel-exclusive feature making its way to Google Photos is Reimagine. This tool allows users to add new elements, such as autumn leaves or lush green grass, that weren’t present in the original photograph. While capable of producing impressively convincing results, Google has recently started watermarking these AI-generated edits to differentiate them from original captures, acknowledging the potential for “blurring the line between which of your memories are real and which are not.”
The update also introduces a new AI Enhance feature. As noted by The Verge, selecting this option generates three distinct edits using existing tools like sharpening and object removal, allowing users to choose their preferred outcome. This new AI Enhance option will be found in the Edit menu, alongside the app’s existing Enhance and Dynamic buttons.

In addition to these AI enhancements, Google has made sharing albums more convenient by introducing a new feature that allows users to generate a QR code linking directly to their album. This QR code can be scanned by friends or printed for group sharing.
The revamped editor is scheduled to arrive on Android devices in June, with the iOS version following “later this year.”
