Google has redesigned the ‘G’ logo

Eagle-eyed Google app users on both Android and iOS may have recently spotted a subtle change to the company’s iconic capital ‘G’ logo. In some instances, the logo now features a gradient effect, softening the transitions between its four distinct colour blocks.

However, this branding update appears to be rolling out gradually. As of this writing, the classic solid-colour block ‘G’ logo persists in various locations, including browser favicons. Furthermore, the gradient version is absent from Google’s official press image collection, which still features the traditional logo for the Google app.

Interestingly, the logos for other Google smartphone applications have not yet adopted this new gradient aesthetic. A notable exception is the branding for Google’s Gemini AI assistant, whose star symbol already incorporates a slight gradient. This raises the question of whether AI branding is influencing broader aesthetic choices at Google, or if Gemini’s look is simply coincidental. It’s also possible that this gradient ‘G’ is a limited trial to assess user reactions before a potential wider brand redesign.

The most surprising aspect of this potential logo refresh is its seemingly unannounced rollout. Google’s last major branding update in 2015 was accompanied by an extensive campaign detailing every facet of the new visual identity. For a corporation of Google’s magnitude, branding is a significant undertaking, with even minor changes typically undergoing rigorous internal review to ensure consistency. The current piecemeal implementation, if intended as a permanent change, is therefore somewhat unusual from a marketing perspective.

We have contacted Google for clarification on whether gradients will become a broader design trend across their product ecosystem in 2025 and for further details regarding this subtle but noticeable logo evolution.
