Good Deed: Hixson, Collegedale students help raise over $17k for new mothers in Sierra Leone

Students at local schools raised more than $17,000 to fund pre- and postnatal care for new mothers and their babies in Sierra Leone.

As part of the Change for Change project, Big Blue Marble Academy students in Hixson, Collegedale and Morristown collected change in March and April to benefit Mission of Hope’s Madonna project at the Rotifunk Hospital. Students made posters advertising the drive and learned about how mothers need healthy food, clean water and doctors to have healthy babies.

“We want Big Blue Marble Academy students to understand that they are capable of making a difference at any age,” Jomar Jenkins, chief executive of Big Blue Marble Academy, said.

The money will provide care for 175 new mothers, and students also made cards to send to them.
