Google is enhancing Gmail with a new feature that will automatically display AI-generated summary cards for lengthy email threads within the Google Workspace app on both iOS and Android devices. This builds upon the AI summary capabilities introduced last year with Gemini side panels for Workspace applications like Docs, Sheets, and Gmail, but eliminates the need for manual activation. Google’s AI assistant will synthesize key points from multiple messages within the thread and present them in a concise summary. This summary will also dynamically update as new replies come in, ensuring you always have the most current overview. Currently, this automatic summarization feature is limited to emails written in English and requires your personalization smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet, as well as smart features in Google Workspace, to be enabled. While Google hasn’t confirmed if auto-summaries will be available for non-Workspace accounts or Gmail on desktop, users can still manually tap the “Summarize this email” option when the automatic summary isn’t present.
