Ghana is strengthening its position as Africa’s gold powerhouse, with record production and a massive surge in export earnings. The country produced a record six million ounces of gold in 2025, while gold export earnings nearly doubled to $20.2 billion. Ghana is now pulling further ahead of major West African gold producers such as Mali and Burkina Faso. But this is about more than gold production. Ghana is tightening control over its gold trade through GoldBod, seeking to formalise small-scale mining, curb smuggling and keep more of the value from its mineral wealth inside the country.
