Ghana, Burkina Faso seal defence deal to secure vital supply routes

Ghana and Burkina Faso have signed a defence cooperation agreement aimed at providing security and escort support along key cross-border trade corridors, Ghana’s Defence Ministry said.

The agreement was signed by Acting Defence Minister Cassiel Ato Baah Forson and Burkina Faso’s Minister of State and Minister of War and Patriotic Defence, Major General Célestin Simporé.

The deal seeks to protect vital trade and supply routes between the neighbouring countries, while strengthening bilateral defence cooperation.

Ghana’s Deputy Defence Minister Ernest Brogya Genfi, Chief Director Emmanuel Kartey and Chief of the Defence Staff Lieutenant General William Agyapong attended the signing ceremony alongside senior officials from the Ghana Armed Forces and members of the Burkinabè delegation.

The ministry said the cooperation was intended to safeguard economic stability and secure critical supply routes connecting the two countries.

It also forms part of efforts to deepen security and defence ties between Ghana and Burkina Faso, which share important commercial links and a land border.

The agreement comes as both countries seek to strengthen security along trade corridors that are crucial to the movement of goods and supplies across their shared border.

The Defence Ministry said the cooperation would support the protection of these routes while contributing to stronger bilateral relations.
