GBA in emergency talks over Barrow’s purported Chief Justice pick

In a notice issued by its Executive Committee, the GBA said the emergency session was called to enable members to examine the “imminent proposed appointment” and determine whether Mr. Faal meets the constitutional eligibility requirements outlined under Section 139 of the 1997 Constitution.

The agenda included opening remarks by the GBA President, consideration of Mr. Faal’s qualifications, deliberations by members, and the adoption of a resolution that could shape the Association’s official position. The Executive Committee underscored the constitutional significance of the matter, warning that the outcome could have far-reaching implications for the administration of justice and the independence of the judiciary.

“All members are strongly urged to attend and participate,” the notice stated, stressing the importance of collective input on the issue.

Who is Edi M.O. Faal?

Mr. Faal is widely regarded as one of The Gambia’s most accomplished international legal practitioners, with a career spanning more than four decades in litigation, arbitration, and mediation across the United States and The Gambia.

Operating from Los Angeles, California, and The Gambia, he has handled complex business disputes, civil rights litigation, criminal defense, and international arbitration. He is licensed to practice law in California, Indiana, and before the Supreme Court of the United States. He is also a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of The Gambia and a member of the Bar of England and Wales.

His academic credentials include a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida International University, a Juris Doctor from Western State University, and a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International Dispute Resolution from University College London.

Mr. Faal gained international attention in 1994 when he represented the children of former American football star O.J. Simpson during the high-profile murder investigation in the United States.

The deliberations come at a pivotal moment for The Gambia’s judiciary. Former Chief Justice Hassan B. Jallow retired on August 1, ending a nine-year tenure under President Barrow’s administration.
