Football: Coach Brys Selects Three Local League Strikers for June Fixtures

Cameroon national team coach Marc Brys has released a squad list of 25 players for two June friendlies. The Indomitable Lions will face Uganda on June 6 and Equatorial Guinea on June 9 in Marrakech, Morocco. Brys has included three local league strikers in the squad: Serge Daura (Gazelle de Garoua), Boris Mfoumou (AS Fortuna de Mfou), and Florent Batoum (Dynamo de Douala).

Serge Daura’s call-up has generated the most buzz. Two years ago, Daura played for Gazelle de Garoua’s reserve team. He saw little action last season in the MTN Elite One, but this year he has become one of the league’s top finishers. With five games left, Daura leads the scoring charts with 13 goals.

Boris Mfoumou brings experience to the team. The AS Fortuna center-forward has already played for the senior national team. Last season, he made the final six for the Cameroon Ballon d’Or. Mfoumou did not win the trophy, but he established himself as one of the league’s most consistent players, scoring 17 goals last term.

Florent Batoum continues his steady rise. He was loaned to Colombe du Dja-et-Lobo last season. Now back at Dynamo de Douala, Batoum has maintained his good form. His recent hat-trick against Victoria United caught the attention of the national coaching staff.

Coach Brys has decided to rest several regulars for these matches, including André Onana, Bryan Mbeumo, Carlos Baleba, and Frank Zambo Anguissa. This move gives young and local players a chance to shine and allows the coach to test new talent.
