Ex-Sierra Leone President Returns Home After Treason Case Dropped
Former President Ernest Bai Koroma left Sierra Leone for Nigeria in January 2024 when the High Court granted him leave to travel on medical grounds, despite being charged with treason. Koroma was indicted for his alleged role in a failed 2023 military attempt to topple the government led by President Julius Maada Bio.
Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan announced Koroma’s departure in a post shared on X, saying he and other partners “encouraged dialogue and engagement with the Sierra Leonean authorities to help create the conditions for his safe and dignified return”.
