Esugo couple hits double medals at National Festival

Delta State’s Kate Esugo and her husband, Okposo Esugo, achieved a rare double-podium finish at the 2024 National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

In a remarkable demonstration of skill and partnership, the couple’s shared success in shooting events has positioned them among the most compelling stories of this year’s games.

Kate claimed gold in the women’s 10m Air Rifle Shooting event, delivering a composed and clinical performance to set a new national record with a total score of 211.0 points.

Her victory placed her ahead of Rivers State’s Zinna Aitsle, who secured silver with 210.6 points, and Ogun State’s Fatima Emmanuel, who took bronze with 186.0 points.

Her win was more than just a personal accomplishment—it also highlighted a unique family moment.

Her husband and fellow competitor, Okposo, also stood on the podium after earning silver in his own shooting event.

Despite narrowly missing gold due to an upset by Ogun State’s Taiwo Ogunbawo, Okposo’s result reaffirmed his position as Nigeria’s top-ranked shooter.
