Eskom Restores Koeberg Unit 2, Adds 930MW After Unplanned Outage

Eskom has successfully restored Koeberg Nuclear Power Station’s Unit 2 to service following an unplanned outage caused by a steam leak on the reheat system. The unit was brought back online on Sunday, 9 March, at 18:17 and is currently operating at 646MW, with plans to ramp up to its full capacity of 930MW in line with operational protocols.

Eskom confirmed that the issue was resolved using robust nuclear safety protocols, ensuring a safe return to service without compromising safety standards.

“Koeberg is a key contributor as part of Eskom’s energy generation mix and stabilising electricity supply in South Africa by providing reliable baseload power. It helps increase the energy security of the country and provide critical megawatts to close our national energy supply gap, and it will continue to play a key role as Eskom moves aggressively into delivering a cleaner energy portfolio,” said Bheki Nxumalo, Eskom Group Executive for Generation.

Koeberg, which has maintained an exemplary safety record for over 40 years, recently secured a 20-year licence extension for Unit 1 from the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR), allowing it to operate until 2044. A similar extension for Unit 2 is under review, with Eskom awaiting the NNR’s decision before its current licence expires in November 2025.

The Long-Term Operation (LTO) programme for Unit 2 included the replacement of three steam generators, extensive inspections, and refuelling activities, ensuring its continued safe and efficient performance. Meanwhile, Unit 1 is undergoing scheduled maintenance, including refuelling and statutory tests, as part of its life extension process.

Eskom emphasised that extending Koeberg’s operational lifespan is vital to South Africa’s energy security, providing clean, cost-effective baseload power and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The utility remains committed to upholding the highest safety and operational standards, ensuring Koeberg continues to play a pivotal role in the country’s energy strategy.

“As South Africa transitions to a greener economy, Koeberg will remain central to our energy future,” Eskom stated. “We are committed to maximising the potential of nuclear power to deliver a cleaner, more secure, and cost-effective energy supply for generations to come.”
