Chelsea playmaker Cole Palmer has hit out at social media “idiots and trolls” following criticism he has received in recent weeks, after ending his goal drought against Liverpool.
Palmer had contributed only two goals in the Blues’ last 12 matches.
However, he calmly converted a last-minute penalty as Chelsea defeated the newly-crowned champions at Stamford Bridge.
Earlier in the game, Palmer had been denied by the upright after beating Alisson Becker from a tight angle.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, the England midfielder responded to the criticism he has faced during his recent struggles on the pitch.
The 22-year-old said: “Sh** happens. It gives me more fight to do well not just for myself, but for my team.
“Social media nowadays is full of idiots, the trolls and whatever. I don’t pay any attention to that.
“To score today, I’m happy, but I’ve got to keep improving and try to reach new levels.
“If you’re getting chances and not scoring, you’re letting your team down at the end of the day. I feel like I’m mentally strong anyway so whatever people say, it doesn’t bother me. I’ve had it all the time growing up.”
