Ebola Strikes Again: New Outbreak Confirmed in Congo’s Province

A resurgence of Ebola has been confirmed in Congo’s Ituri province, marking the nation’s 17th outbreak of the virus. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention stated that there have been 246 suspected cases and 65 fatalities so far.

The outbreak in this remote eastern region of Congo poses risks of spreading to nearby Uganda and South Sudan due to intense population movements and security challenges. Bunia, Ituri’s main city, lies close to Uganda, amplifying concerns among health authorities.

Africa CDC is collaborating with national and international partners to orchestrate a rapid response, with priorities focusing on surveillance, resource mobilization, and cross-border coordination. While Ebola vaccines exist, logistical challenges hinder swift delivery due to inaccessible road networks and funding constrictions.
